A chief information officer (CIO) is the corporate executive in charge of information technology (IT) strategy and implementation. In addition to overseeing the hardware, software and data that helps other members of the C-suite do their jobs effectively, the CIO must research new technologies, strategize how technology can provide business value and address the risks associated with digital information. In many companies, CIOs report directly to the chief executive officer (CEO), and at some companies, the CIO sits on the executive board.

CMOs Must Evangelize Customer Centricity and Acrossthe Enterprise

Over the last five years, I have had the pleasure of working with and career counselling some of New Zealand’s leading lights in terms of Board Members, C-suite executives and IT technicians. This extraordinary experience has helped me garner a greater understanding of my industry and opened my eyes to new perspectives of how people from all corners of the globe operate in a business environment. One point that has always particularly fascinated me however, is how the southern hemisphere measures up to its northern counterpart. In many respects, there is negligible difference in business ideas and performance, but that’s not to say that there doesn’t seem to be some small element of playing catch up when it comes to corporate structure.

There is no better time to be a CIO than now. If there is one role in the executive suite that will have impact in the next five years it is that of the IT leader.

PWC put out a study which said that the top five concerns of CEO are: Security, Analytics, Mobility, Cloud and IoT (Internet of Things). They are ALL technology related. If this isn’t a huge opportunity for the CIO, then I don’t know what is! 

CIOs have the ability to drive both the top and bottom lines of an organization – we just have to take the opportunity that currently presents itself, get our ideas out, and be effective players in the leadership team. It’s all about adding value and the art of the possible.

Social media is moving like a train with no brakes, providing a real time feedback mechanism for a multitude of companies. Consumers, both individual and corporate, now have multiple feedback forums. These forums can be used to tell others that, in an attempt to get to a live customer service representative, it takes seven automated screening prompts. After these prompts, you reach a live person who is likely from a developing country and is taught to respond to customer issues with only pre-prepared scripts.

The Legacy of Combined CIO/COO Roles

According to the Association of Executive Search Consultants’ (AESC) Q3 State of the Industry report, the technology sector  held a year-on –year increase of +12.3% in executive searches.
